History

Rushdie’s works especially Midnight Children can be seen as falling under the post-colonial genre. As India gained Independence in 1947, Rushdie uses this significant historical event as the starting point for his fiction to investigate and explore the people of India and the economic, political and emotional effects that the British brought and left behind. Seeing Rushdie’s work through a post-colonial lens allows the reader to analyze and explain the effects and consequenses that colonization and imperialism or the extension of power unto other nations, have on people and their national identity.

In this interview Rushdie speaks about his writing and the nature of his fiction.
